Galata Kulesi

Galata Tower or Galata Kulesi is one of the oldest medieval towers still in existence. The tower is known for its breathtaking views and fascinating history. The two hundred feet tall cylindrical structure, situated in Beyoğlu, İstanbul, was built by Byzantine Emperor Justinian in 528 CE, making the tower 1506-year-old in 2022! Besides being a historical artifact itself, it is also renovated to serve as a museum at present.

Galata kulesi has a rich history. At first, the tower was built as a light-house. The Genoese colony took control of the area with the tower in 1348. The tower was the tallest building in the great Constantinople City. In 1453 during the conquest of İstanbul, Sultan Fatih Mehmet famously steered eighty ships around the tower walls on land and placed them in the golden horn, which made the city of Constantinople vulnerable and eventually led to its fall. After conquering Istanbul, Sultan Mehmet ordered to bring the walls down but to leave the tower untouched. The tower was then used by the Ottomans as a war prison, observatory, and lighthouse. The Galata Tower has huge importance in the world of aviation as well. Turkish scholar Hezarfen Ahmed Çelebi is accounted to have made the first-ever non-powered sustained flight in the year 1638, starting from the top of Galata Kulesi and landing on Doğancılar Meydanı the other side of the harbor in Üsküdar. Twice, the tower was damaged by fire, in 1794 and 1831, after which, several restorations were done. In 1875, the roof of the tower which was reinforced by Sultan Selim III with lead and wood in 1794 was destroyed by a storm. Galata Tower remained without a roof until 1967 when the roof was reconstructed. The latest restorations happened as late as 2020.
