There is a saying in Turkiye "Bir fincan kahvenin kırk yıl hatırı vardır" meaning "A cup of coffee has a memory for forty years". The governor of Yemen introduced coffee to Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent who popularized it throughout his empire. During the reign of Sultan Murat lV, drinking coffee was prohibited and punishable by execution because it was seen as a drug. But the immense popularity of the drink meant that the Sultan had to lift the ban and legalize the consumption of coffee.

Coffee beans are finely ground and brewed by boiling along with water and sugar in a special pot called 'Cezve'. It is prepared with either little, average, or too much sugar or without any sugar. The top half of the first boil is distributed to three cups and the remainder is returned to heat for a second boiling, after which, it too is distributed among the cups.
